Higher Certificate in Arabic Studies
The Higher Certificate in Arabic Studies builds upon the foundations laid in the Certificate in Arabic Studies (CAS) programme. Designed to enhance and deepen students’ understanding, this course expands on the core modules of CAS, with a particular focus on strengthening knowledge of the Arabic language and its connection to Islam.
Topics such as grammar, syntax, and other key aspects of the language are thoroughly explored.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
- Min age of 14 years & above
- Must be able to read and write Arabic alphabets*
- Have basic English proficiency**
* To enrol in Basic Arabic Bridging Programme if not able to

EXEMPTIONS
- Exemptions can be granted based on prior undertaking of Arabic studies/modules.
- Decision to grant exemption is based on complete submission of proof of prior studies.

MODULES
Arabic Syntax (Nahu)
Arabic syntax is the study of the rules governing the structure of sentences in the Arabic language. It is a crucial aspect of the Arabic language as it gives words and sentences their precise meanings by clarifying the relationships between words within a sentence. This module focuses on enhancing learners’ understanding on how sentences in Arabic are structured and the meanings behind the word order.
Arabic Morphology (Sarf)
Arabic morphology is the study of word forms and patterns, including how nouns, pronouns, and adjectives change their forms in a sentence. This module examines systematically the nature of words and their forms, including their components and interactions and how their meanings are derived from thereon.
Arabic Eloquence (Balaghah)
Arabic Eloquence is also known as Balaghah which is the study of eloquence and rhetoric. This module aims to build the learners’ competence in Arabic language and to foster literary appreciation. This is the foundation to the study of the eloquent expressions in the Quran, and ultimately towards the appreciation of the linguistic miracle of the Quran.
Comprehension (Insha')
This module builds up the comprehension skills of learners in reading and understanding Arabic text. Learners will be exposed to various Arabic texts that are categorized based on themes to help learners to understand and extract meaning from text, develop critical their thinking skills, and improve overall reading proficiency in the Arabic language.
The below modules will be exempted for those with Certificate in Arabic Studies or its equivalent
Intro to Arabic Language
This module prepares students to be conversant in the language of the Quran. It covers from the basic vocabulary to the structures of the Arabic language so as to allow learners to develop basic listening, reading and comprehension skills.
Qiraah/Kitabah
A detailed study into the sounds of each letter in the Arabic language so as to expose learners with the correct pronunciation of each letter. Learners will learn the art of ‘khat’ – Arabic writing in its various forms.
Intro to Arabic Grammar
Learners will learn the science behind the language as they are exposed to the rules & structures shaping the composition of sentences & words. It provides the skeleton that allows the language to be expressed beautifully.
Ta’bir
Language, culture, and religion are intricately interconnected that it’s almost impossible to understand one without the other. This module allows learners to delve into the rich cultural and Islamic texts by honing their ability to form coherent sentences as a mode of expression
Tajweed
This is a comprehensive module to master the essential phonetic rules for proper Quranic recitation. Besides developing Quranic fluency, students will learn the intricacies of tajweed rules, its pronunciation techniques and rhythmic patterns, encouraging them to recite the Quran with precision and beauty.
Intro to Arabic Literature
Arabic literature is the gateway to fully appreciate Quran, Hadith and other important Islamic text like sermons and letters written by the Prophet’s companions. It allows learners to have a deeper understanding of classical text and deepens your appreciation of the language.
